پدر وی پرچمدار هدایت و مرجعیت شیعه بود و از نظر شان و منزلت تا بدان جا رسید كه امام حسن عسگری (ع) طی نامه ای، او را با لقب شیخ، فقیه و معتمد مورد خطاب قرار داد.

شیخ صدوق، روزگار طفولیت و سنین جوانی را در دامان خانواده ای با فضیلت، با تقوا و تحت تعلیم و تربیت پدر سپری كرد، او در مدت كوتاهی به واسطه هوش سرشار و حافظه فوق العاده قوی، به قله های بلند كمالات انسانی دست یافت و توانست در20سالگی، هزاران حدیث با سلسله سند را حفظ و به آنها عمل كند.

وی در روزگار جوانی پس از فرا گرفتن علوم مقدماتی، حدیث و فقه، به منظور دیدار با مشایخ سایر نقاط شیعه نشین به سیر و سیاحت در ممالك اسلامی و مراكز علمی شیعه و سنی پرداخت و برای بهره گیری از دانش علما و دانشمندان مذاهب اسلامی به مسافرت های طولانی رفت.

از جمله حوادث مهم دوران زندگی شیخ صدوق، روی كارآمدن سلسله ایرانی و شیعه مذهب آل بویه بود كه بر بخش بزرگی از ایران، عراق و جزیره العرب تا مرزهای شمالی شام فرمان می راندند.

آل بویه كه به دیالمه نیز مشهور بودند، در قسمتهای مختلف ایران (مركزی ، باختری و منطقه فارس و سواحل خلیج فارس) دولت نیرومندی تشكیل داده و باعث تقویت و رواج مذهب شیعه شده بودند. شیخ صدوق در این دوران به درخواست ركن الدوله دیلمی از قم به ری آمد و در آنجا ساكن شد.

شیخ در قم، ری، نیشابور و مشهد مقدس احادیث جالبی در مباحث گوناگون به شاگردان فاضل و دانشمند خود ارائه و شاگردان او این احادیث را نوشته و جمع آوری می كردند از جمله این دست نوشته ها می توان، 97 مجلس را نام برد كه به نام ' امالی' یا' مجالس' چاپ شد.

عصر صدوق را باید 'عصر احیا تنقیح حدیث ' نامید زیرا پس از رحلت پیامبر اسلام، بازار جعل حدیث رونق گرفته و كارخانه حدیث سازی خلفا شروع به كار كرده بود و كسانی پیدا شدند كه بطور حرفه ای، احادیثی را جعل و به پیامبر و ائمه نسبت می دادند.

از این رو محدث بزرگوار 'كلینی'، از استادان شیخ صدوق، كتاب شریف 'كافی' اولین كتاب از مجموعه چهارگانه كتب روایی و حدیثی شیعه را نگاشت و حركت علمی جدیدی را در مكتب حدیث نگاری اهل بیت(ع) بنیانگذاری كرد كه پس از او،' شیخ صدوق ' بنای مستحكم ضبط و نشر حدیث را بر آن بنا نهاد و توانست آثار زیادی را بیافریند كه در خصوص تعداد این آثار، شیخ طوسی نوشته است، وی نزدیك به 300 كتاب تألیف كرده است.

از جمله تالیفات او می توان از من لا یحضره الفقیه، كمال الدین و اتمام النعمه، امالی، صفات شیعه، عیون الاخبار امام رضا(ع)، مصادقه الاخوان، خصال، علل الشرایع، توحید، اثبات ولایت علی علیه السلام،معرفت، مدینه العلم، مقنع در فقه، معانی الاخبار، مشیخته الفقیهو و عیون نام برد.

صدوق، به خوبی دریافته بود كه بهترین شیوه برای حفظ و حراست از سخنان پیشوایان دین، برای آن كه از تعرض محفوظ بمانند، انتقال آن به دلبستگان مكتب اهل بیت است؛ از همین رو با پرورش شاگردان و طالبان دانش، به نگهداری و صیانت از این میراث گران بها پرداخت.

از شاگردان وی می توان از دانشمند بلند آوازه، 'محمد بن نعمان' معروف به 'شیخ مفید' نام برد كه خدمات بسیاری را به جهان اسلام عرضه كرد. فقها و بزرگان مسلمان، شیخ صدوق را بیشتر با لقب 'رییس المحدثین' شناخته اند؛ زیرا او در شناخت احادیث، آگاه و در حفظ منابع و جمع آوری آن ها تلاش فراوان می كرد.

شیخ صدوق احادیث را به تناسب موضوعات مختلف دسته بندی و برای هر موضوع، باب جداگانه ای باز می كرد. از جمله مسایلی كه در علم رجال و شناخت راویان حدیث مطرح و سبب پذیرش حدیث محدثان می شود، تصریح دانشمندان این رشته علمی به اطمینان و صداقت راوی است از آن جهت شیخ را صدوق نامیده اند، زیرا در نقل حدیث از ائمه(ع) خصوصا امام صادق و امام باقر(ع) از راه صواب خارج نشد و در فهم آن ها به خطا نرفت.

فقیه گرانقدر علامه بحـر العلـوم پیرامون شیخ صدوق می نویسد: 'ابو جعفر محمـد بن علـی بن حسیـن بن مـوسـی بـن بابـویه قمـی پیشوایی از پیشـوایان شیعه و ستونـی از استـوانه های شریعت است. او رییـس محدثین و در آنچه از ائمه صادقیـن نقل كرده راستگوست.'

پس از شهادت امام حسن عسگری، غیبت صغرای امام زمان(عج) آغاز شد و در طی این مدت افرادی بین آن حضرت و مردم به عنوان نائبان خاص، رابطان امام با مردم بودند. نواب امام در طول غیبت صغری چهار نفر بودند كه از سوی امام عصر(عج) به این سمت منصوب می شدند، شیخ صدوق در اوائل نیابت سومین نائب، حسین بن روح بود؛ كه این خود از عوامل بسیار موثر در پیشرفت و تكامل علمی و خصوصا معنوی صدوق بوده كه توانست با این توفیق خود را به بلندترین قله های نورانی علم معنویت برساند.

سرانجام عالم بزرگوار، شیخ صدوق در 76 سالگی در سال 381 هجری قمری چشم از جهان فرو بست و در شهر ری پیكر پاكش در میان غم و اندوه مردمان تشییع و در جوار مرقد مطهر حضرت عبدالعظیم حسنی به خاك سپرده شد.
